In order to express this information easily, currencies are always quoted in pairs, for example EUR/USD. The first currency is called the base currency and the second currency is called the counter, or quote currency (base/quote). For example, if it took $1.07500 to buy €1, the expression EUR/USD would equal 1.075/1. The EUR (euro) would be the base currency and the USD (dollar) would be the quote, or the counter currency.
"At the end of my first week demo trading on the system, I thought I would write you a bit of feedback. Basically I had a good week. I did 12 trades, of which 8 were in profit; total pips profit 130, total pips loss 17; overall profit 113 pips. In one case I closed a trade for a small loss because it was going the wrong way, then some hours later checked and found that if only I had been patient, it subsequently moved as expected. So overall a good and encouraging start. Once again thank you for the excellence of your training which I am confident now has given me the basis to become a successful trader" - Peter
You'll need to fill out a brief questionnaire about your financial knowledge and trading intentions. You'll also need to provide an ID, and the minimum deposit your Forex account institution requires. That's it. You're now free to trade. Incidentally, many Forex brokers will take your credit or debit card in lieu of cash, so, you really don't need to deposit any money at all—not that this is a good idea. If you don't have the cash now, how will you pay for losses later? Credit card debt carries high-interest rates.

It's important to consider whether a Forex broker and their trading platform will suit your trading style. For example, you might be interested in following a Forex scalping strategy, which involves making a high volume of small profits on small currency movements. In this case, you would need to ensure that any potential broker has minimum distance between the market price and your stop-loss and take-profit.
The intricate, complex ways of the financial markets often confuse the beginning traders. The two types of analysis, the different kinds of data and their contradicting signals, the vast choice of brokers, various trading styles, the many voices that shout buy and sell all the time are very intimidating to those who do not possess the free time necessary to study this field and for staying up to date with the data releases, news, and analysis offered by the myriad media channels. Traditional forex trading is high risk and can be difficult, especially for beginners. Casualty rates tend to be high, since success demands specialized knowledge, experience, and emotional control. It is easy to become impatient, look for shortcuts, and then allow your emotions to take over, a recipe for failure.

The abbreviation CFD stands for “Contract for Difference”. It is a contract between two parties: the seller pays the buyer the difference between the current value of an underlying asset and its value at the moment the contract is made if the difference is positive, and, vice versa, if the difference is negative, the buyer pays the seller. With CFDs traders can get access to underlying assets without actually owning them.
When you take a look through the possible currency pairings available at any Forex Broker you will find a figure presented as a percentage. So for example if the pairing you have chosen to base your Forex trade around has a payout percentage of let’s say 81%, then if your chosen currency increases in value at the expiry time of your trade for every 100.00 you have placed on that trade you will be paid out 181.00.
The gold standard was temporarily abandoned during the First World War and definitively abolished on April 10, 1933. At the outbreak of the Second World War, the exchange rate to the U.S. dollar was fixed at C$1.10 = US$1.00. This was changed to parity in 1946. In 1949, sterling was devalued and Canada followed, returning to a peg of C$1.10 = US$1.00. However, Canada allowed its dollar to float in 1950, whereupon the currency rose to a slight premium over the U.S. dollar for the next decade. But the Canadian dollar fell sharply after 1960 before it was again pegged in 1962 at C$1.00 = US$0.925. This was sometimes pejoratively referred to as the "Diefenbuck" or the "Diefendollar", after the then Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker. This peg lasted until 1970, with the currency's value being floated since then.

It’s estimated that the retail Forex industry accounts for around 5% of the total daily turnover of the market, i.e., for around $250 billion. However, the Forex market is big enough that no single market participant can notably influence exchange rate moves, not even big banks with their multi-million orders. This levels the playground a little bit and provides fair market pricing to all participants.
Consider this: large volumes of currencies are traded in the markets due to the necessity of currency exchange required in international trade. Large institutions may need to settle accounts in a cross-border manner quite frequently. As an example, an American company, looking to pay its German division, will need to pay them in euros. This means a forex transaction will be completed, and will likely influence the EUR/USD pair, even if only slightly.

The price of silver is driven by speculation and supply and demand—mainly by large traders or investors, short selling, industrial, consumer and commercial demand, and to hedge against financial stress. Compared to gold, the price of silver is notoriously volatile. This is because of lower market liquidity, and demand fluctuations between industrial and store of value uses. At times this can cause wide-ranging valuations in the market creating volatility.

While all forex brokers offer stop/loss features when trading it is possible to exceed loss levels set due to slippage. Due to the high levels of risk this presents day traders may select a broker that offers guaranteed stop loss orders. This means they can’t lose more than a set amount for a trade. Another fail-safe brokers offer is negative balance protection. This is where broker automatically exit CFDs traders from the market when their deposit level reaches $0 balance. Even if slippage does occur, the broker pays the difference. Reading the risk warnings of brokers is important prior to trading currency.
In most cases, a pip is equal to .01% of the quote currency, thus, 10,000 pips = 1 unit of currency. In USD, 100 pips = 1 penny, and 10,000 pips = $1. A well known exception is for the Japanese yen (JPY) in which a pip is worth 1% of the yen, because the yen has little value compared to other currencies. Since there are about 120 yen to 1 USD, a pip in USD is close in value to a pip in JPY. (See Currency Quotes; Pips; Bid/Ask Quotes; Cross Currency Quotes for an introduction.)
MAM stands for Multi-Account Manager. Other brokers might also refer to this type of account as a PAMM (Percent Allocation Management Module). It’s a technical software setup that allows for multiple client accounts to be automatically consolidated into a single, centralized terminal for the account manager to trade from. In our case, we use a single installation of the trading terminal program MetaTrader 4 (MT4) to trade each strategy. The MAM is set up on the broker’s server side, so allocation is instantaneous.

On July 3, 1934, with only 10 chartered banks still issuing notes, the Bank of Canada was founded. This new government agency became the sole issuer of all federal notes. It began issuing notes in denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $25, $50, $100, $500 and $1000. In 1944, the chartered banks were prohibited from issuing their own currency, with the Royal Bank of Canada and the Bank of Montreal among the last to issue notes.

To use an extreme example, imagine holding an account balance of 2,000 EUR and putting all of that on a single trade. If the trade goes badly, you will have lost your entire investment, and because the Forex market can move very quickly, losses can also happen very quickly. This is where risk management is essential - to help you minimise losses and protect any profits you do make. The key areas to consider when managing your Forex trading risk are trading psychology, and money management.
For the active trader, execution speed and fill price are very important. I won’t get too in depth here but I have tested many of these brokers and there can be noticeable differences in trade execution times and quality. For the majority of investors, saving a penny per share on a 100 shares order isn’t the end of the world, but for active traders it is something to look into. To understand Order Execution, read this guide.
Hi Will, loving your tuition, loving my trading and really feel I'm making great progress. Not just on where to enter and where to exit, but your whole mentoring on risk management and patience has been invaluable. It has been a long road for me to get here and while I have more of a journey ahead, I know I will get there and I have set myself ambitious and challenging goals, but one step at a time.
When you’re ready to purchase some forex education, you will decide on signing up for an online course, possibly with a community membership aspect, or finding someone you admire and joining a one-on-one mentoring program. The latter is the most expensive option by far but will provide you with highly personalized training and superior support through your early trades. This option will be excessive for most, and generally people will be happy paying a subscription or lump sum fee for life-time access to an in-depth training course plus ongoing membership to a community with regular trading support.
Take time to learn the gold chart inside and out, starting with a long-term history that goes back at least 100 years. In addition to carving out trends that persisted for decades, the metal has also trickled lower for incredibly long periods, denying profits to gold bugs. From a strategic standpoint, this analysis identifies price levels that need to be watched if and when the yellow metal returns to test them.
According to the 2018 Greenwich Associates study, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase & Co. were the two biggest banks in the forex market, combining for more than 30 percent of the global market share. UBS, Deutsche Bank, and Goldman Sachs made up the remaining places in the top five. According to CLS, a settlement and processing group, the average daily trading volume in January 2018 was $1.805 trillion.
The forex market is completely electronic, which means there’s no central marketplace, so you’ll need to trade through a forex broker. Although you can buy or sell currencies directly through banks and other similar places, the advantages of forex brokers are all the added value they offer you – like trading platforms and analysis tools (more on this later).

Trading foreign exchange on margin carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. The high degree of leverage can work against you as well as for you. Before deciding to trade foreign exchange you should carefully consider your investment objectives, level of experience, and risk appetite. The possibility exists that you could sustain a loss in excess of your initial investment. You should be aware of all the risks associated with foreign exchange trading and seek advice from an independent financial advisor if you have any doubts.
Now we have explained what spreads are and how they are calculated, it is important to stress the critical difference between the standard market maker broker with their advertised fixed spreads, and how an ECN - STP broker (such as FXCC) operates, whilst offering access to the true market spreads. And how a broker operating an ECN - STP model is the right choice (arguably the only choice) for traders who consider themselves professionals.

The foreign exchange market (Forex, FX, or currency market) is a global decentralized or over-the-counter (OTC) market for the trading of currencies. This market determines foreign exchange rates for every currency. It includes all aspects of buying, selling and exchanging currencies at current or determined prices. In terms of trading volume, it is by far the largest market in the world, followed by the credit market.
Newfoundland went decimal in 1865, but unlike the Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, it decided to adopt a unit based on the Spanish dollar rather than on the U.S. dollar, and there was a slight difference between these two units. The U.S. dollar was created in 1792 on the basis of the average weight of a selection of worn Spanish dollars. As such, the Spanish dollar was worth slightly more than the U.S. dollar, and likewise, the Newfoundland dollar, until 1895, was worth slightly more than the Canadian dollar.

find forex brokers that have offices in reputable countries like in UK, US, Canada, and Australia because the regulatory compliance of these countries are much better than others..that’s why I say that. In the US, a reputable forex broker will be a member of the National Futures Association (NFA) and will be registered with the U.S.Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a futures commission merchants and retail foreign exchange dealer. In the UK, forex brokers are regulated under the Financial Conduct Authority(FCA) and in Australia, forex brokers are regulated under the ASIC.
The foreign exchange market assists international trade and investments by enabling currency conversion. For example, it permits a business in the United States to import goods from European Union member states, especially Eurozone members, and pay Euros, even though its income is in United States dollars. It also supports direct speculation and evaluation relative to the value of currencies and the carry trade speculation, based on the differential interest rate between two currencies.

To what extent fundamentals are used varies from trader to trader. At the same time, the best FX strategies invariably utilize action. This is also known as technical analysis. When it comes to technical currency trading strategies, there are two main styles: trend following, and counter-trend trading. Both of these FX trading strategies try to profit by recognising and exploiting price patterns.
Margin – The deposit required to open or maintain a position. Margin can be either “free” or “used”. Used margin is that amount which is being used to maintain an open position, whereas free margin is the amount available to open new positions. With a $1,000 margin balance in your account and a 1% margin requirement to open a position, you can buy or sell a position worth up to a notional $100,000. This allows a trader to leverage his account by up to 100 times or a leverage ratio of 100:1.
Trading the forex market is closed on the weekends because institutional forex traders and large banks (the buyers and sellers of foreign exchange) operate during working hours in the week and take time off on weekends. Most jobs operate in this manner and the forex market is no different. However, just because the forex market is offline, it doesn’t mean you have to be. The weekend presents a great opportunity for traders to learn, reflect and plan for the upcoming trading week.

Most traders falter when the time comes to switch to a live trading account. Experts recommend a minimum of 3 months’ worth of successful demo trading before moving into a real money account, but the time may vary for different traders. Traders have been known to spend even 6 to 12 months on a demo trading account before finally making the transition. Although you may feel ready for the markets, take it slow, and start trading in small amounts with trading capital you can afford to lose. Never over leverage your account, and always ensure you follow all the money management principles and trading strategies you will have developed through your demo trading. It’s easy to become emotionally involved, but it’s imperative to remove the emotion from trading and adopt the same attitude that helped you find success in your demo trading environment.
